Small boost to Independent campaign
as ballot order announced
17 February 2006
At the Western Australian Electoral Commission office tonight, Andrew Owens, Independent candidate for Victoria Park, drew the coveted first spot on the 11-candidate ballot.
"Clearly, many individuals feel as I do that the status quo must change, as an 11-candidate ballot for a by-election is highly unusual in Western Australia," Mr Owens said after the ballot was taken, pointing to the 8-candidate race for Richard Court's seat of Nedlands in 2001.
"I think that such a large choice available to the voters can only be a good thing, and I hope that after viewing all the alternatives available, the voters will decide that a capable, experienced Independent with a strong belief in representative democracy is the best person to represent them at Parliament House."
Mr Owens also took the opportunity to unveil the campaign slogan, "Working for you", which will be used on all campaign materials and advertisements until polling day.
